orpheus

orpheus was the greek god of music. it was said that with his lyre and singing, he could charm every living thing on the planet. orpheus had a wife named eurydice whom he loved above all else.

then one day as eurydice was out picking flowers, she ran into aristaeus who was captivated by her beauty and immediately became obsessive of her. eurydice ran from aristaeus but the aristaeus would not give up and chased after her. in their chase, eurydice accidentally stepped into a nest of snakes and was bitten. the bite proved fatal and eurydice die soon after.

devastated by the death of eurydice, orpheus played such sad songs and sang so mournfully that all the gods wept. the gods took pity on orpheus and advised him to go to the underworld to persuade hades to return eurydice's soul. orpheus' music touched even the stone heart of hades and the god of the underworld agreed to release eurydice under one condition : orpheus must walk in front of eurydice and never look back until they've both left the underworld.

but as they pair began their journey, orpheus began to worry if it was trully his eurydice walking behind him or if it was hades' trick. they were almost at the surface but orpheus could not stand anymore and turned to greet his wife. as soon as orpheus saw eurydice's face, she said goodbye to her husband forever and vanished...
